Interestring Quartet believes in sparking that sense of wonder, in opening our mind to miracles in the mundane, in transforming the everyday into the extraordinary.
The 2014 release of the very first eponymous album of Interestring Quartet blew the minds of Taiwan’s performing arts circle. Wei-Jun Huang, the head and lead violinist of the band, along with the second violinist Wei-Hsin Liu, violist Ti-Chi Yeh, and cellist Chun-Lin Yeh, together started the first jazz string quartet in the greater Chinese area. Blending jazz, pop, R&B, blues, country, and world music, the ensemble translates string music into a rhythmic fusion of transcultural sound influences that defies the labels of traditional string quartet. The critically acclaimed band has received numerous recognitions, including the 2015 Golden Melody Awards (nominations for best album, best album producer, best composer, and best recording under instrumental music category), 2015 Golden Melody Awards for Traditional Arts and Music (nomination for best crossover album), as well as 2015 Golden Indie Music Awards (winner of the best jazz album).
Their long-anticipated second album Miraculous, released at the end of 2016, is a genuine documentation of each member’s circuitous artistic journey since the band’s inception. Revolving around the fundamental composition of a string quartet, the ensemble re-interprets the centuries-old genre, expanding the music form into unexpected syntheses between string quartet and diverse instruments from vocal to percussion, from double bass to piano trio with vocal. These collaborations not only instantiate creative experiments to seek new musical possibilities, but spark miraculous moments that enliven and rejuvenate the world of string music.
